Economic Impact of Arts and Culture

Art Districts have a significant economic impact on cities by attracting residents, visitors, and businesses.  For over 30 years the U.S. has been investing in the Arts as a way to encourage economic development and to increase social and cultural representation with remarkable results (1).  The recent Americans for the Arts’ economic impact study (AEP6) showed that the arts and culture industry generated $151.7 billion in economic activity and supported 2.6 million jobs (2).

Cultural destinations also have important impacts on a country’s economy by bringing foreign and national visitors, and, therefore, increasing revenues and promoting opportunities for job creation. Cultural tourism accounts for an estimated 40% of all tourism worldwide, according to the United Nations World Tourism Organization, and countries around the world are investing in cultural tourism in order to boost economic growth and sustainable development (3).

The Northside Cultural Arts District will support the local economy, including the cultural tourism elements, and improve the quality of life of the Northside residents.
