Placemaking through
arts and culture

The Northside Cultural Arts District is a community-based initiative envisioned by local Syracuse artist Daniela Nikolavsky, not-for-profit organization Hopeprint, and residents/stakeholders of Syracuse’s Northside neighborhood.

The mission of this project is to establish a cultural arts district in Syracuse Northside as a way to increase and strengthen equitable representation of the diverse population in the cultural, economic, and social domains. The Northside Cultural Arts District (NCAD) was inspired by numerous best practice examples of neighborhood resurgence through arts and culture. Theaster Gates’ Rebuild Foundation in Chicago, Illinois; Mural Arts Philadelphia Program, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and Jason Roberts’ Better Block are examples of placemaking initiatives that were often in mind during the conception of this project.
